about

I met Micah maybe 6 years ago when I came to Portland to visit a friend who lived in the area and was invited to a jam session that another friend was hosting (ironically only a few blocks from where I live now).

Micah was subbing for the regular drummer (who I also had never met), and just absolutely floored me as possibly the best drummer I'd seen in real life; most certainly in my age range. The fluidity and level of expressiveness that he is able to play with and the inventiveness of his virtuosic technique has been a constant marvel to me throughout the years, and he somehow manages to continue to improve and carve out his own unique sound within the local scene, on top of making major waves as an international touring drummer for several different acts.

Micah has a really cool hybrid electro-acoustic setup thanks to his Sunhouse Sensory Percussion, so I asked him to make use of it however he wanted, and he sent me some raw drum stems along with some slightly modified stems that utilized Sunhouse's software and MIDI data manipulation, so I tried to incorporate the two additional FX parts into all of my own FX processing in a way that would make them all blend together homogeneously.

This track, "180º", is rather specific and complicated due to the strange syncopations in the synth bass part, almost to the point where you feel like you're turned around, or flipped upside down. Micah's playing is so delicate and precise, so I used his playing as a nice tether for some more adventurous reverb and delay blends, along with some moderate side-chaining to give the whole track a "heartbeat" amidst all the rhythmic obfuscation.
