about

Grey is another sick local drummer that I still have yet to meet, but is just absolutely crushing.

I don't know what's in the water, but all these super talented young drummers keep cropping up out of nowhere. One day Grey never existed, and the next, he's among Portland's drum vanguard, putting in major work in the prog/math scene.

I really appreciate how grounded his time feel is through all of the crazy polyrhythms (with complex stickings) that he's shredding over, and that he has full control of the timbre of his instruments. It's so precise, yet doesn't feel robotic.

I was waiting patiently for his band Pedestria to release their debut EP, but the single that I heard a month or so ago really inspired me to try and come up with something for Grey to play that would be a healthy challenge, but also still fit my style.

"Aether" is a 10-bar, 4-part composition that is deceptively difficult. There are several meter changes, over-the-barline phrasing, and a countermelody that is contrapuntal to the main line that drives the piece. With all that said, Grey makes it sound extremely easy, which is a testament to his playing.

I didn't do too much to the production of this track beyond the four parts; my focus was mostly trying to mix/master the drums in a way that fit more of a prog/metal aesthetic, since that's something I don't do much of.
