about

I'd argue that drums are a religion for many of us, and that would make Kirk a high priest.

This man engages in sacred prayer; rudiments and calisthenics for hours a day.

He preaches the gospel; studying groove and time feel to its core. Spreading the word of our Messiah, the pocket. Kirk has studied groove deeply, and can talk for hours about his concept and approach to groove in every genre imaginable. Seriously. He has a Facebook series dedicated to chatting with other Portland drummers about virtually anything surrounding drums and musicianship through the lens of a drummer. Check it out.

But perhaps high priest is the wrong analogy; Kirk is more like a T-1000 Terminator unit.

He's a cold hard killer, and his accuracy is inhuman. I don't think I've ever seen the guy mess up, like, ever. Every stroke and every beat is 100% intentional, and he manages to maintain the time of a Swiss watch while still adding personality to his sound.

This track is called "Automaton", and is completion of a sketch for a solo piano piece I wrote back maybe 4 years ago.

I know Kirk can play just about anything, so my focus for his track was to give him something that could really be taken in any direction he wanted. There are a few hits here and there, but for the most part, the drum part could be whatever he wanted.

I only gave Kirk a Wurlitzer part, and he effectively inspired the rest of the arrangement. My focus for this track was inventive use of layering, and optimizing my EQ'ing skills. There are a bunch of composite sounds layered together, and I also layered some of Kirks drum stems and automated different effects to move things around in the mix.

As for the video, I wanted something that looked as clean as Kirk's playing, but with lots of character, colors, and textures, which are also a big part of his playing.
