Andres' time feel is unwavering. He always knows what's happening on the bandstand, and is an absolute master at supporting other musicians and giving them exactly what they need to feel successful and comfortable in what they're playing.

This guy can't even legally buy a drink, yet he's chopping it up with Portland's finest players; young lion, cutting his teeth with the big cats. Yet still incredibly humble, and constantly growing and improving at his craft.

Andres and I have had a few nice chats about African diasporic rhythm and its ties to Latin music, so I decided to create a fairly abstract piece for him that would push his time feel to its limits.

"Cacao" is a yet another 14-beat cycle, but this one also has a contrapuntal pulse over the syncopation of the original pulse, which can then be divided into 6-beat phrases with underlying 5-beat phrases. Essentially, a slightly uncommon version of a very common phenomena in many types of Afro-Latin music.

I decided I wanted to work on sample rate automation for this installment, as well as more avant-garde use of a Leslie rotor simulator that I've never used. (Production nerds; see if you can tell how it's being used)

I also had a bunch of cool African instrument samples that I wanted to incorporate into something, so I tried to mix all of the percussion and Andres' parts so that they sounded like a choir of percussion instruments, rather than a drummer and a backing track. A bit more authentic that way...
