about

Dan used to be one of the filthiest drummers in Portland, and just happened to move to Ann Arbor, MI right before I moved back to Portland, so we actually haven't officially met, but I am very familiar with his music and skills (he's also a talented keys player and producer), and after being floored by his latest album ("In the Aether", definitely check it out), I knew I needed to work with him in some capacity.

Dan somehow manages to make the most complex and polyrhythmic ideas feel like second nature when he plays, so I wanted to give him something that was pretty rhythmically cut-and-dry, so he could twist it up a little and re-structure the pulse however he'd like.

This piece, "Coriolis", was a good opportunity to get a bit sneaky with the melody and sound design, as well. The melody at the beginning is a twelve-tone row (i.e., twelve notes with no repeated notes) I wrote back in college, and is actually repeated throughout the whole piece at varying rhythmic rates; I just threw chords underneath to make it seem less avant-garde than it would normally be. I also think that Dan's syncopation helps distract from the abstraction of a melody that doesn't repeat any notes.

On a side note, Dan recorded this killing drum part in the middle of an incredibly busy week as an Emergency PA at University of Michigan; it's thanks to people like Dan that we can feel a bit safer in times like these.
