about

The titular track.

I actually wrote this piece for Todd Marston, the keyboardist playing Rhodes at the very end of the track. He actually the first musician I met upon moving back to Portland that made an effort to get to know me musically and involve me on a project performing original music.

During my tenure as saxophonist for his band, Integer, I became very familiar with Todd's imaginative and pensive compositions– he has this way of using harmony as a sort of veil that flows and follows the hips of his dancing melodies.

The interplay between Todd, Andrew Jones (who is also on the record), and Micah Hummel (a far better drummer than me) inspired me to try and compose a piece that fit the aesthetic of that band.

I don't know if Todd has synesthesia, but I've always felt his music lies between two distinct hues; as if it were sliding around the spectrum from section to section. "Gradient" aims to do this harmonically, but without sacrificing the entrancing sway of the melody.

I enlisted my mentor Darrell Grant to play piano on this piece because of how incredibly melodic he is in everything he does. Whether it is sharing sonic space with jazz phenoms Brian Blade, Bill Frisell, and John Patitucci on his album "Truth and Reconciliation" 15 years ago, or premiering Portland's very first black opera just last year, melody is clearly the prime directive for Darrell at all times, and he plays with color like a master painter.
