about

Dan is a true drummers' drummer. His technique is flawless. He's studied and transcribed all of the greats. He has an amazing drum kit. And he is really getting his name out there as a bandleader.

I constantly find myself saying "how did Dan get so good?", "how did Dan get this super cool gig?", and the answer is always "talent + work ethic + personality". Dan is like the poster child for the fine balance that you need in those three things to be successful, and he's also just a great friend and incredibly supportive and insightful guy.

Oh yeah, and he writes his own original music for the bands he leads, which is so refreshing to see since he could easily just lean on his chops and not worry about composition.

Speaking of composition, this track, "Harvest", was a fun venture for me. I cam up with this cool 3-part saxophone cadenza right before moving to Portland 2 years ago and named it "Before Harvest", so I figured I might build upon the vocabulary of that piece and expand upon it a bit more.

Harvest alternates between 26-beat and 29-beat phrases, and 100% of the parts were played by me on tenor saxophone. No other instruments were used (besides drums, obviously), and I had fun working with some plugins that I've never used before and doing some more stereo and frequency oscillation experimentation. Dan's also going bonkers over the whole thing.
