about

Jacobo Vega-Albela.

Jacobo is yet another participant in this project that I haven't met in real life, but we've known each other for nearly half a decade. We met through Farnell's Newton's "Jam of the Week" series on Facebook, and Jacobo has been a nice set of ears to bounce different rhythmic concepts off of because he has an astute attention to detail and openness to exploring the jigsaw puzzle that makes up most rhythm and polyrhythm on drums.

Jacobo has the ability to play complex ideas in a way that makes them seem rudimentary, so I thought it would be fun to give him a track with a fairly complex division/subdivision breakdown and see how he interpreted it.

This track, "Isosceles", is aptly named because it really is comprised of three big beats, but can be segmented equally in many different ways, creating a consonance or dissonance with the incredibly slow pulse. I originally played key drums for this piece while doing a live set and tracked virtually every rhythmic variation I could think of just to compare and see how Jacobo interpreted it, and he ended up feeling it in several of the ways that I feel are the most interesting segmentation of the beat.

I haven't been playing much soprano sax lately, so I wanted work on tracking that in unique ways without detracting from or modifying my core sound on the instrument, so I experimented with trying to fit two contrapuntal parts in the mix in a way that would allow for both voices to still stick out. One part is more consonant and aligned with Jacobo's "division" of the beat, while the counterpoint is more polytonal and stretches to match the forced subdivisions that he implies in various parts.

I also had fun bringing out a specific sub-bass frequency in Jacobo's kick drum and tried to make a palatable mix that had it front-and-center (if you're not listening from a phone).
