about

Simon Peter King.

I hate him. You know why? Because Simon can literally do EVERYTHING well.

He is a monster drummer, stellar pianist, crushing bassist, and those aren't even his main instrument. He's primarily a guitarist, and he is absolutely thermonuclear.

But it doesn't just stop there. No no no...

Simon can cook. I mean, REALLY cook. Professionally trained in French cuisine, artisan bread baker, owned his own restaurant.

Simon takes photographs that make me want to cry. He hikes the mountains in UK and Ireland and takes these photos that you'd see as wallpaper for the next MacBook Pro.

The list goes on. Super talented and amazing (vocalist) wife, awesome kids, sharp wit and sharper sense of humor. The man is a walking liability. Nobody can do anything with Simon around.

But he's also just the nicest job-taker you could ever know, so I guess I can't really hate him. But I can pretend to...

Simon can play any style of music you give him, so I decided to use him to fill the stylistic cracks that I haven't explored through this project yet. I sent Simon what I felt like was a somewhat jazz fusion-oriented loop called "On The Prowl", and I thought he would give me the good ol' fusion chops over it, but instead, he gave me like 30 seconds of that, then all these wacko polyhrhythms and hemiolas, so I figured I'd change the sound design up a bit and go more in the "90's anime theme" direction with some ambient synths ping-ponging around in the mix and some retro synth bass down low.

I also did some more tinkering with fidelity and tried to cause some "rub" in the stereo mix by sending conflicting signals on a few of the tracks through an auxiliary bus (i.e., I had lots of fun).
