about

A brilliant multi-instrumentalist, dumbfounding music theorist, master educator, loving husband/father, and mentor to generations upon generations of musicians across the nation, and beyond.

It's always strange to remember that Portland has this mammoth of a pianist, accomplished trumpeter, and drummer extraordinaire just kinda milling about and popping in on people's gigs. George hires his students to play in his groups all the time; the same groups that tour the world and host some of New York's finest musicians. This guy just happens to live in town, so we get our fair share of him when he's not on the road.

I figured there wasn't a single thing I could throw at George that would pose any sort of challenge to him on a technical or theoretical level, so I threw him a wild card.

"Quark Matter" is what the entire universe was comprised of immediately following the Big Bang. Before fundamental interactions of gravitation, electromagnetism, the strong interaction and the weak interaction, there were simply Quarks. Unstable, unbridled, and unrestricted.

This piece is basically the same. No rhythmic precedent, very ambiguous harmonic structure that changes temperament at minute level, and a bunch of insane sonic choices on my part. George played whatever he wanted, and I went nuts on abstract sound design.

Duplication, over-exaggerated compression, really odd tremolo manipulation, and a myriad of other tricks contributed to this very abstract piece, and it is definitely the most "out" track in this project.
