I feel like Barra and I are cut from the same cloth in many ways. We're both classical trained woodwind students that mostly get work as drummers. We both lead both a modern jazz trio that incorporates elements of other genres into a repertoire of modern, mostly original compositions, and we've both co-founded an electronic duo(+) project that often shares the same featured artists for bigger shows. Barra dabbles in guitar, I dabble in piano.

I feel like I see Barra at practically every show any of my peers are involved in; he's a true curator and benefactor of the arts, with a penchant for creative sound design and multimedia presentation. He's always putting on the coolest shows, constantly adding to an incredibly diverse portfolio of work, all while maintaining a truly engaging and inviting demeanor.

This track, "Scarab", stems from a short 2-bar loop that I came up with a couple years back that incorporates an interlocked piano and Rhodes part. I felt like it sounded like it could have been a fragment of a song from his band Korgy and Bass, and he played it exactly how I expected him to, which made the arrangement process much smoother.

I played around with a lot of stereo automation on this track, as well as stronger compression than usual and some pitch variance for a more vintage cassette sort of sound, incorporating some tape delay as well.
