"Solace" was actually the first composition I ever wrote, or rather, partially wrote.

I started it in high school, but I didn't have the compositional or theoretical knowledge to really put it on paper properly. So it lived a series of voice memos on my 4th-generation iPod Touch until my sophomore year of college.

I met a pianist who agreed to help me notate "Solace" over the summer of my sophomore year, and he gave up after a few hours because certain aspects of it were too idiomatic.

Flash forward seven years, and I finally begin to work on "Solace" with a broader understanding of rhythm and harmony, and now have to de-code my old voice memos and try to remember the atmosphere I was going for since I had trouble conveying it on piano (my fifth instrument).

I didn't finish Solace until 2021, but I feel it still fits the aesthetic of the rest of these much more recent compositions. I had far fewer harmonic and rhythmic resources at my disposal, but I think this gave the ensemble plenty of room to interpret and grow the piece in ways that my newer compositions perhaps perhaps didn't.
