Steven just kinda walked into the Portland scene out of the blue.

I'm one of the house drummers for a weekly jam session my roommate hosts at a nearby venue that attracts all sorts of musicians, but mostly people I knew or recognized. I remember Steven used to come to those sessions every week, and I never saw him get up to play; he was just there to listen and observe.

One day he hops up, and he just decimates the drums. He's playing jazz, he's playing funk, hip-hop, fusion rock, etc. He's coming to sit in every week, turning heads, and integrating well into the scene. Steven's just a comprehensive drummer, through-and-through.

Steven's also an accomplished videographer and creative screenwriter, so I figured I could put both skills to use for this project.

"Spelunking" was a fun exercise of taking a pretty well known bassline (you know where it's from, but it's also from a few other places besides that) and totally re-structuring everything around it to make it into something new. Steven drummed along to the bassline, but I added a bunch of other stuff and then felt the strong desire to go the lo-fi route and squash Steven's crispy drums into oblivion
