Remy and I go way, way back. Back to high school; the days of beardlessness and naïveté.

I made lead alto in the All-State Jazz Band, and Remy was drummer for the All-State Jazz Choir. We formed a band a year later when I moved to the Seattle area for college, and then kept in touch when I transferred colleges across the state.

I've ran into him a few times in Portland when he's come down on tour with some of the numerous bands he plays with, yet I always miss him any time I'm up in Seattle.

This is one bad hombre. Remy has this way of making everything sound easy and incredibly thought out, no matter what the difficulty. His feel is just so deep-rooted, and he is really great at bringing the best tone out the drums in front of him, whether he tuned them or not.

The track I gave Remy, "Waxing/Waning", is a composition of mine that I finished right before we all got a mandatory vacation, and I was curious how Remy would interpret the tune since it's rather complex, but is designed to feel simple. There are a bunch of meter changes and very unusual phrasing that often leaps over the bar line, but you can't really tell when Remy plays through it; the mark of a true pro.

Just like the piece before it, I primarily envision a night sky when thinking about "Waxing/Waning", and often cold, but pleasant walks I used to take through a quiet small town in Eastern WA.
